Ericsson Admits Defeat

Perhaps saturating the market with one completely unusable phone after another is bad for business.

Ericsson of SonyEricsson infamy has closed its Bluetooth Division. I have a little bit on sinister glee to see harm come to one of the companies responsible for making products that could have been so cool had they drifted justly slightly to this side of absolute suck. The truth is, I think the Bluetooth functionality of their phones was the only thing that did work. It was the user interface design and implementation as well as the reception and industrial design that failed so miserably.

Senior Center

I was at Santana Row and I've never seen so many animatronic humans in my life. They were everywhere and so life-like. They even made one of Paul, they got his voice and mannerisms perfect. They are technically dazzling but make me a bit uneasy.

I noticed their signage uses their initials, Sr. Which means I must call it the Senior Center.

Visiones

Tonight, at MACLA, I saw a screening from a series of Documentaries titled Visiones about Latino art and culture. The screening was followed by a performance by Guillermo Gomez-Pena who was featured in the film. It was great, he is so intense and funny as well. JJ is a big fan of his, tonight was the first time I've seen him and I like.

The films will be shown locally by KTEH starting September 7.

Pegasus Crossing

If you want to experience joy to the fullest, you must treat yourself to Napoleon Dynamite. The cast of characters are made up of little tiny slices of all of us, the good and the bad.

Gardner Community Center

San Jose's newest community center opened its doors this past weekend. There is a public art installation consisting of photos blown up and glazed onto a grid of ceramic tiles. Here is some info on that artist. The photos used were selected from personal collections of community members so the community center serves as the neighborhood's photo album.

Dear BrandsOnSale

I am writing regarding your Child Ho Costume. You see these guys at MIT.... never mind, I heard about your site. I think it is great that you are serving the small but important market consisting of little girls who want to be Hos and most importantly the parents who encourage it. I couldn't help thinking after seeing the photo that it's a flapper costume. What I couldn't help noticing was that you think so too. Good for you for charging a few bucks extra for it. By the way, how could the costume be one size fits all AND come in five different sizes?

Yours Truly,
Half-Assed Homemaker

Sunday Zucchini

Pick some zucchinies about 3 inches long, be careful not to knock off the blossom. Under a slow stream of water rub only the actual fruit clean, not he blossom, don't run water on it yet. Slice the zucchini in half lengthwise, first cut the fruit, then gently drag the blade of the knife against the puffiest part of the blossom (lengthwise). Break off the pistil or halves of pistil from both sides, that's the naughty bits.

Now gently rinse the blossom, hold by the fruit and trickle water on the inside and then on the outside. Lie them on a plate, cut side up. Sprinkle with kosher salt and grind on some pepper. Listen to JJ when she suggests you serve them raw.

Oh by the way

figured out where Sunflowers hide their seeds

Worst feeling ever

I woke up this morning look curiously at the alarm. "Why is my alarm going off on a Sunday morning?" I thought.

Brief pause.

"Crap!"

Late Dinner

If you're going to cook with leftovers, be sure the leftovers consist of organic pinto beans that you pressure cooked and stored for later use, some finely chopped onions and bell pepper because you can't help but chop more than you need.

Start heating the beans in some oil and some crushed garlic add salt and pepper. Sweat the onions and peppers in a pan. Add half of them to the beans. To the rest of them, add two beaten eggs, salt and pepper, let sit for a minute and then scramble. Heat some corn tortillas in the toaster oven, on a grill or on a hot iron skillet. Serve the beans and some eggs on the corn tortillas. Add diced tomatoes and hot sauce.

New Switcher Ads

Errol Morris has cut together seventeen new switcher ads in his classic style but sans music. They show people talking about how poor their previous choices were, how it affected their businesses, families or friends. It is really interesting to hear from people who changed their minds like that.

These are not ads for Apple though, the ads are for John Kerry.

Oh Sesame

Last night there was someone at the door. It was my neighbor. As I opened the door, the cat walked out. Seeing the cat seemed to astonish her. Apparently little Sesame is often at her house basking in off treats and kind petting. He must have snuck out at some point the last time he was there because she never saw him leave. After four (sleepless) days of looking around for the cat in cabinets and closets she finally came over to ask if I'd help her look for him in some cabinets that she couldn't reach. She was afraid he was trapped somewhere and he would "pass away" if left there for too long. It was so sweet, kind of funny and most importantly... Sesame's double life is now out in the open.

Dancing

Jj and I went dancing last night. By that I mean we wandered by the back door of the Latin jazz club and broke out into convulsive semi-rhythmic movement.

Farewell to a Greedy Ugly member of the household

After over a year and blowharding about my grass, we did something about. No longer will it thirst for water. No longer will the neighbors brandish torches at my door in order to get me to mow it. Well we still have a little grass but JJ wanted it so it's her baby.

JJ and I smothered it with a layer of newspaper and a layer of mulch. Once the grass dies and decomposes we'll put in some plants. On the docket are tufts of native grasses and some creeping lavender along with any other drought tolerant plants that we find. I believe I will let a pumpkin plant go wild in the front next season as well.

I hardly knew him

I'm not sure if it is a testament to Steve Jobs'' inconicity or the desperation of the press but something is out of place when someone is being eulogized for surviving surgery.

I'm just waiting for the dedication of Jobs San Jose iAirport. Norman Y. Mineta's memory will be pissed!
